European Silver Fir - Abies alba

£11.95

The European Silver Fir (Abies alba) is an evergreen coniferous tree. It is native to the mountains of Europe, from the Pyrenees to the Alps and the Carpathians, and south to Italy and Greece. It is also grown as a Christmas tree in some parts of North America.

The European Silver Fir has needle-like leaves that are glossy dark green above and have two white bands of stomata below. It produces cones that are 9–17 cm (3.5–6.7 in) long and have about 150-200 scales, each with two winged seeds. The wood is white, hence the name alba. It prefers sites with high rainfall, fresh to moist soil, and poor to medium nutrient status. Increasingly popular in the Christmas tree market.

The current height of these fir tree saplings is approximately 10-20cm and they can be planted out all year round.
